AT&T announces AT&T Mobile TV for May launch

Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds, Portable Video

They haven’t revealed anything we didn’t already know, but AT&T’s finally come out with a semi-firm date for the launch of its MediaFLO-powered mobile TV service which will be branded simply as “AT&T Mobile TV.” It’ll be available to subscribers in May — no specific date just yet — on two exclusive handsets, the Prada-esque LG Vu and the more pedestrian Samsung Access; the Vu features an expansive touchscreen and 2 megapixel camera, while the Access makes do with a smaller landscape display and a 1.3 megapixel sensor. Both feature Bluetooth and 3G data, but the real story here is Mobile TV itself, which will come with two new channels that are exclusive to AT&T (in other words, unavailable on the other live MediaFLO service, VCAST TV from Verizon). The latest, hottest way to burn productivity on the go gets real in just a few short weeks, folks, so finish up whatever remaining work you have now.

HTC Shift hands-on

Filed under: Features, Handhelds, Tablet PCs

HTC’s Shift finally launched in the US this week, and what do you know, we landed one to check out. Sure as hell ain’t too shabby for a UMPC, but while it’s got a number of things working in its favor (versatile form factor, solid hardware, lots of niceties like a fingerprint reader, 3G, Windows Mobile, etc.), it’s got a number of bits working pretty hard against it. Some thoughts:

  • The screen hinge is significantly improved and feels really solid. Without putting it through 20,000 open / close cycles, we think it’s fairly trustworthy, definitely good HTC gear.
  • The microscopic keyboard keys are an absolute nightmare to type on with two hands if you’ve got normal human mitts. Unfortunately, it’s just too small to use regularly, and too large to use with your thumbs; with that kind of real estate we’d have preferred a proper split thumb-board with a nice big track pad in the middle. Major bummer.
  • The trackpad is pretty sensitive, but a little difficult to control. The machine itself is certainly snappy enough, though, even running Vista with Aero.
  • Hitting SnapVUE / Windows Mobile-mode is instantaneous, albeit a little jarring — especially since the screen is so huge and WinMo is so clearly not intended for it — but it’s nice to have a lighter weight interface than full-on Windows.
  • Try though we might, we simply could not find a way to disengage the unit from its leather-bound case. Maybe this was outlined in the Shift’s documentation, of which we received none. Quite annoying.
  • HTC kindly bundles a screen protector, a spare clicky stylus, external USB hub with Ethernet (ahem, Air), and headphones with mic.

All in all not bad, but it’s going to take a hell of a lot more than what the Shift’s offering up to get us to drop $1,500 on a UMPC of any kind. And it isn’t winning it any further points considering that one of the device’s main draws — the keyboard — may as well not even exist for us fat-fingered fools. Check out the extensive unboxing and hands-on gallery below.

Update: Apparently the case is permanently bolted to the unit and can’t be removed, part of some weird FCC requirement regarding antenna distance / SAR. At very least they HTC could have used Philips head screws (and not Torx) to facilitate ease of removal.

Problems with census PDAs could prompt a return to pencil and paper

Harris Corp. may have nothing but good things to say about the HTC-made PDAs it’s planning to supply for use in the 2010 census, but it looks like the handhelds are already starting to cause plenty of headaches for census officials, who are reportedly even considering a return to pencil and paper if things can’t be resolved. As the AP reports, the problems start with the contract for the devices, which originally clocked in at $596 million, has since grown to $647 million, and could eventually balloon to as much as $2 billion. As if that wasn’t enough, the handheld has also apparently proven to be “too complex” for some of the temporary census workers that took part in a test last year, and the device was reportedly “not initially programmed to transmit the large amounts of data necessary.” As a result, census officials are now said to be considering a number of different options to scale back the use of the devices, only one of which apparently actually has the headcounters entering data into ‘em as they go door-to-door.

MD Sound’s KO-GPS4 navigator includes e-book reader

Can’t say it’s likely that you’ll find MD Sound products on just any ole store shelf, but for those that look hard enough, they can procure the firm’s latest PND, the KO-GPS4, right now. Carefully watching his words, the outfit’s head of product development notes that “as far as [it] can tell, [this unit is] the first personal navigation device to include the popular e-book capability.” Beyond that, you’ll find a built-in MP3 / video player, photo viewer, Li-ion battery good for three hours on a full charge and a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Yeah, the $249.99 sticker may be tempting at first glance, but we’re pretty confident you can still do better for two and a half bills. Full release after the jump.

Caption contest: the Kindle cake

Sure, it might not be as filling as the Skoda cakemobile, or as family oriented as Martha Stewart’s Wii cake, but do those contain the thrilling tale of The Light Beam Rider? Yeah, we thought not.

Paul: “Unfortunately the screen refresh times of ‘30-35 minutes at 350 degrees’ is just plain unacceptable.”
Chris: “Moments later, a naked Jeff Bezos burst out, ready to greet everyone at the shareholders’ meeting.”
Richard: “Philippe Starck calls the Kindle ‘a little delicious.’ “
Sean: “No friends, that’s not the iCing phone, tis the Kindle Cake and it serves 12.”
Don: “You can never be too careful buying gadgets on eBay.”
Josh: “The Light-Beam Rider was surprisingly short.”
Ross: “The book is a lie.”

HTC Shift is finally coming to the US on the 24th with Sprint 3G

Filed under: Handhelds, Tablet PCs, Wireless

Ah, after long last, HTC’s first UMPC, the Shift, is finally making its debut in the US. The early results are in: the keyboard and the Sprint EV-DO are good, but the $1,500 price tag might be a bit heavy to swallow — especially considering our European counterparts are paying about $400 less, and we also get to tack on another $60 per month for the 3G.

Samsung said to be prepping lower cost, education-minded Q1 Ultra

Samsung’s already busted out a handful of different Q1 Ultra models, but it looks like it’s now come up with yet another variation to throw out there, this one aimed at the education market. According to Pocket-lint, Samsung is dishing out this latest incarnation in order to compete with Asus’ upcoming 9-inch, Windows-based Eee PC, although it’s not quite going head-to-head with it in terms of price, with this particular model apparently set to demand ?399 (or just over $800) when it hits the UK next month (no word on a release ’round these parts). While complete specs are still a bit light at the moment, the new Q1 will apparently drop the spiffy dual camera and cut back on the hard drive to keep the cost down.

We have previously posted a trick showing how to prevent WM 5.0 and ActiveSync from draining your battery. At the time of writing it was a 6 step process but now all is made in CAB file for your ease. The zip archive contains CAB and setup launcher for easy installation plus a short TXT doc. The core file works by setting Cradled value to zero every minute. When nothing is cradled no synchronization takes place at least per personal observation. Download file Source gpcarre

Intel roadmap reveals 1.87GHz, dual-core Atom processors

Intel certainly hasn’t been holding back on its near term plans for its MID-powering Atom processors, but the company has been a considerably more coy about anything beyond the initial 1.6GHz Atom 230 series processor. We now have a slightly better idea of what to expect from future MIDs, however, thanks to one of those always handy roadmaps that Notebook Italia has turned up. According to it, following Atom 230, Intel will dishing out two separate 1.87GHz processors, one of which will be a dual-core model, while the other will follow in the 230s footsteps with a 533MHz bus and 512KB of Level 2 cache memory. Unfortunately, there’s no word as to when those processors will ship or how much they’ll cost, but the roadmap does drop the tidbit that the 1.6GHz Atom 230 will cost just $29 in 1,000-unit quantities, which isn’t too shabby at all.

Motorola’s TEAM smartphones aren’t cellphones — yet

It’s not every day that we hear about a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device that lacks any cellular hardware whatsoever, so when we do, it’s sort of like winning the lottery except way less exciting and profitable. Enter the first volley of devices to support Motorola’s new Total Enterprise Access & Mobility initiative — TEAM, conveniently — which represent just the very front end of a whole infrastructure solution for business campuses looking to replace their desk phones with something just a little more mobile and modern. Eventually, TEAM will support true VoIP-cellular handoff, but in its initial form, it’ll be WiFi only, making these first handsets very unique indeed. We don’t have the complete picture on specs here, but they’ll support push-to-talk, text messaging, and as we mentioned, they’ll be loaded with the very latest and greatest that Windows Mobile have to offer when they launch later this year.
