Bape puts its mark on limited edition DS Lites
Filed under: Gaming, Handhelds
It’s not like there’s any shortage of highly desirable DS / DS Lites out there, but we’ve all ideas this particular iteration will be one desired by many and acquired by (very) few. Japanese clothing company A Bathing Ape (Bape) has apparently signed on to put its spin on Nintendo’s darling of a handheld, littering both a gold and white DS Lite with Milo characters. As for pricing, we’ll just assume that those that need to ask should simply push this far from the forefront of their minds.

Intel branding Montevina platform Centrino 2?
Think you’ve mastered Intel speak? Impressive, it’s no easy task keeping Intel’s brand names and in-house silicon language straight. Now rumor has it that Intel’s Montevina will carry a new Centrino 2 branding in hopes of clearing up any confusing amongst consumers. Probably a good idea what with Centrino providing the catch-all since the launch of those Carmel, Sonoma, Napa, and Santa Rosa platforms running Pentium M, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo branded Banisa Banias, Donthan, Yonah/Merom and Merom/Penryn processors. If true, a Centrino 2 sticker would indicate 5th generation, Montevina-class Centrino with support for 45-nm, Core 2 Duo Penryn CPUs, a 1066MHz FSB, DDR3 memory, and mobile WiMax. Still not clear? No worries, try the handy table after break.

Debunk: Samsung P9 UMPC
Filed under: Gaming, Handhelds, Laptops, Portable Audio, Portable Video
We’ve been getting tipped all morning on a supposed Samsung P9 UMPC. Sorry Charlie, it’s not the P9. It’s not even from Samsung. As sleek and sexy as this crazy, detachable slider is, no amount of wishful thinking is going to make it more than a university design project. An HTC Shift-inspired concept by Umang Dokey. Okie, uh, dokie? Nevertheless, we’ve posted the video after the break — it deserves to be seen.

Samsung ACE global smartphone, M520 go live on Sprint
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds

Given the BlackJack’s popularity on AT&T, it only makes sense that Sprint (among other carriers) would be looking to get in on that action. Indeed, as expected, Sprint has now launched Samsung’s ACE (get it? like the really good card to have when you’re playing blackjack?) that comes out swinging with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO, and a SIM slot for hooking your globetrotting butt up with GSM service when you find yourself overseas; what it doesn’t have is HSDPA, so don’t look at this puppy as an apples-for-apples BlackJack II replacement. It’s available now for $199.99 after the usual laundry list of rebates and contract discounts.
Separately, Sprint has also gone live with the M520, an unassuming slider we’ve known about for a while now with GPS, a 1.3 megapixel cam, and tethering capability. This one comes in at a reasonable $49.99 after rebate on contract.

Palm Centro now official on AT&T
Wow, sure enough, those green buttons are straight up legit — who’d have thought? The long-rumored GSM cut of the Palm Centro is now officially available on AT&T in the wake of Sprint’s expiring exclusivity, giving a whole new world of customers access to the freakishly small (yet strangely adorable) Garnet handset. Unlike Sprint’s version, the GSM Centro tops out with EDGE data for a moderately less snappy browsing experience; otherwise, though, your $99 on contract is going to buy you a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth 1.2, support for AT&T’s push-to-talk service, and a full (albeit miniaturized) QWERTY keypad. So who’s liking this more than the white / gray scheme we’d seen before?

HP iPAQ 610 series soldiers on outside US
Filed under: Cellphones, Handhelds
So apparently HP just has a very special form of hatred for its native soil, because that iPAQ 610 series with that nifty touch sensitive scroll wheel embedded in the keypad now appears to be canceled only in the US. This bittersweet news comes courtesy of British retailer Devicewire, which reports that it’ll have examples of the iPAQ 614 available to its customers as soon as next Monday for the princely sum of ?389.99 (about $765). That’s fine, though, HP, whatever. We didn’t want your stupid iPAQ anyway.

Fix coming for HTC’s drivergate, sort of
When CEO Peter Chou himself declares that there’s a fix en route for the video problems plaguing several of his company’s devices, that’s a pretty good sign — there are a couple of catches, though. One, we still don’t know which devices will be patched, and two, it turns out that the fix to improve video acceleration performance still won’t involve an actual driver for the ATI silicon within the Qualcomm chipsets. Our mommies always told us never to look a gift horse in the mouth, so we’re going to stay cautiously optimistic here until we get the actual patch out in the wild (in March, if we’re lucky) for some testing.

Guitar Hero Carabiner keeps those fingertips calloused
Filed under: Gaming, Handhelds
If you (for whatever reason) thought the Air Guitar Rocker spotted at CES was the next best thing to Guitar Hero itself, you’ve got another thing comin’. Debuting at Toy Fair 2008 in New York, the Guitar Hero Carabiner takes thrashing to an entirely different level, albeit a much tinier one. Yep, this 7.75- x 3-inch device features a minuscule LCD screen, integrated speaker, five gloriously colorful buttons and a loop for clipping onto your knapsack (or similar). Additionally, the neck itself collapses down to make the entire thing just 4- x 3-inches for easy portability, and best of all, it can be yours for the low, low price of $14.99.
