Groqit barcode scanner has your hippocampus’ back
Filed under: Handhelds
C’mon, we’ve all done it. Standing vigilantly in front of the DVD section, our mind races to remember whether or not we already own Land Before Time 11: Invasion of the Tinysauruses, and in a fit of frustration, we make the purchase anyway only to come home and find it sitting peacefully in one of the thirteen movie racks. If that hits home, you should definitely take a peek at Groqit — a handheld barcode scanner that prefers to be called a “personal inventory management system.” Owners simply scan in every book, CD and DVD they own, take it along for any future shopping sprees and use it to tell whether or not they’ve already purchased a given title. It should be noted, however, that it doesn’t play nice with jewel cases, but apparently, the manufacturer thinks the $95 price tag more than compensates. Honestly, is the return process that much of a hassle?

Inventec’s UMPC 7-A and 5-D get pictured
Our eyes may still be slightly out of focus from the complete lack of sleep obtained while at CES, but the two Inventec UMPCs purportedly going by 7-A / 5-D sure look a heck of a lot different than the model we peeked in Vegas. As you can glean from the image above, the UMPC 7-A sports a nifty slider design that supposedly places the QWERTY keyboard at a “more natural angle” for the user. As for the so-called UMPC 5-D (shown after the jump), it ditches the aforementioned design and takes a more modular approach to satisfy those who just adore buying a new dock for every handheld they own. Regrettably, we’ve no hard details surrounding the specs of these two machines, but we doubt we’ll have to twiddle our thumbs for too much longer before finding out.

Nokia E65: Fabulous and Attractive
Sony delays Skype PSP and microphone launch, indefinitely
Filed under: Gaming, Handhelds
Weird. After making such a fuss, Sony Japan just delayed Skype on PSP services in Japan. A move with a definite knock-on effect for the rest of world. The cause of which seems to be Sony’s two microphone products — the single pack PSPJ-15010 and twin pack PSPJ-15011 — which “did not meet the Skype specifications” and thus failed the certification process. Something you think Sony would have known well before the eve of the scheduled January 24th launch. We’ll let you know when a new date is announced.
Update: This just in from Sony, “the SCEJ announcement regarding the delay of the PSP microphone peripheral and Skype service doesn’t have any impact on the North American (or European) launches of Skype for PSP, which will coincide with the PSP firmware upgrade slated for the end of January.” Straight from the horse, as it were.
