WiBrain’s B1 UMPC hits the FCC, every branch on the ugly tree

WiBrain’s B1 UMPC hits the FCC, every branch on the ugly tree

We’re not sure what else there is to know about the WiBrain B1 UMPC — we’ve seen it hands-on, unboxed, and even slightly redesigned — but true gadget pr0n connoisseurs crave only the sweet nectar of FCC reports, and it looks like today is your special Friday. Yep, there it is, and there’s not much of the way in details we didn’t already have — except now you can tear up over both the beautifully ugly lines of this thing and the massively boring RF test results.

Sega Toys Brain Checker keeps you on your toes

Though we don’t believe this to be one of those “mind-controlled tech toys” Sega Toys was working on, it’s pretty evident that it will give your mind a workout. From what we can tell, the Brain Checker is a standalone gizmo designed to stretch your mental muscles with a myriad puzzles, but most everything beyond that is lost in translation. We do know, however, that it can be had in Japan for around ?5,775 ($51), but who knows if it’ll make it’s way to any other corners of the globe.

Palm Treo 755p goes live (at last) on Verizon, costs more

Palm Treo 755p goes live (at last) on Verizon, costs more

Here’s a special present to those Palm diehards out there that’ve been sticking with their Verizon service for the past months, hoping against hope that Palm will notice them hanging out over on the largest CDMA network in the States: the Verizon Treo 755p costs $400 with a two year contract, a full $150 more than you’ll pay over on Sprint. The $400 price is after a $50 mail-in rebate, but if you play your cards right and spring for the right data plan you can get the final price down to $300. Obviously there’s nothing new on the hardware end of things — other than that ultra-fancy new paint job and Verizon logo — so at least you folks know what you’re getting yourselves into. Oh, and from the looks of things, this is that unnamed device Palm teased about earlier this month. Sorry to disappoint.

Is this the mylo 2?

So we were doing some followup research on yesterday’s post about the upcoming mylo 2 Personal Communicator, when we happened to stumble upon the picture you see above, first posted in the beginning of October by qj.net. Part of an article sourcing someone claimed to be “close to Sony.” this supposed mockup of the second-generation mylo immediately struck us as having an almost identical form factor to the FCC render that we just saw. And sure enough, as you can see after the break, a little resizing magic does indeed show the two outlines lining up pretty closely — although not perfectly. Hmm…if this is in fact the production version of the mylo 2, what does that PlayStation-style typeface on the keyboard say about the device’s features, we wonder?

Keepin’ it real fake, part CIII: half Nokia, half HTC, all ripoff

As if the N73 wasn’t already up for the “most knocked off cellphone of the century” award, here we have yet another rip that wasn’t even so kind as to stick solely to the Nokia motif. Rather, the ZTC 8898 threw in a dash of HTC to flavor things up, and apparently, this unit can even handle its fair share of NES (SNES?) emulation. Specs wise, we’re lookin’ at a 2.5-inch external display (and a 2.8-incher on the inside), dual SIM card slots, built-in camera and a pair of janky speakers to boot. We understand that buying both of the handsets this thing mimics wouldn’t be cheap, but seriously, don’t do yourself the disservice of plunking down $189 on this.

The 2007 Engadget Awards: Nominate the Handheld of the Year

It’s time for the 2007 Engadget Awards, and we’re asking for your nominations for the Handheld of the Year.

Nominating is easy, simply leave a comment with what you’re nominating for this category. We’ll round up the best selections and put them to the popular vote.

Here’s five simple rules of what NOT to do:

  • Don’t include your reasons for nominating it.
You can debate the product later when we put it up to vote. Just leave the name of what you want to nominate, ok?
  • Don’t nominate anything that wasn’t sold for the first time in 2007.
We will allow updated versions of previous devices, however.
  • No concept devices or prototypes.
It has to be a real gadget people can buy! Pre-orders don’t count.
  • Don’t nominate anything more than once.
It’s not a popularity contest (yet), all it does is make our lives harder. Just do a quick find to see if someone’s already beat you to it.
  • Seriously, don’t nominate anything that’s already been nominated!

Thanks, and good luck to all the gadgets!

GP2X-community system dubbed Pandora?

The tips have been flowing in hot and heavy on this one, so we felt it only fair to pass along the latest rumblings in the world of GP2X to you. We first got word that a new emulation monster could be coming from the GP2X community back in September, and if late breaking mockups and specification lists are to be believed, that system is indeed Pandora. Notably, the product seen above is purported to feature a keyboard (obviously), 4.3-inch 800 x 480 resolution touchscreen and built-in WiFi (802.11b/g) — all inclusions that were previously mentioned — along with an ARM Cortex A8 CPU, OpenGL ES 2.0-compliant 3D hardware, dual SDHC expansion slots, TV output and USB connectivity. Unfortunately, we know nothing more than that at the moment, as dates / pricing still remain a mystery, but if Pandora does prove to be more than a figment of someone’s imagination, we’re betting it’ll be worth the wait.

Update: Looks like the price is set at around $320, while the release should happen in March or April.

Audiovox must be kidding with its D1817PKG portable DVD player

Sheesh — what’s it going to take to get a decent portable DVD player? Just after we’d been tricked into believing that it couldn’t get any worse, along comes Audiovox to take things to a whole new low. This so-called conglomerate doesn’t even bother sharing its screen resolution with us, but does take the time to showcase its rechargeable battery, integrated stereo speakers, pair of folding headphones and credit card sized remote. Additionally, you’ll find a car power adapter, carrying case, and a controller to play the 30 surely riveting games that are built in. Here’s a tip: take your $123 and do almost anything with it. Chances are you’ll be better off than trying your luck with this thing.

Update
: Audiovox pinged us to let us know the screen resolution is actually a halfway respectable 720 x 480 pixels, and it also touts composite video in / out along with headphone / RCA audio outputs.

Sony Reader PRS-505 gets spine ripped (carefully) off

‘Twas inevitable, really. Shortly after Amazon’s Kindle hit the hands of eager early adopters, someone with a extra dash of curiosity showed us what the guts looked like, and now it’s time for Sony’s own Reader to experience the same. One dutiful owner managed to strip the proverbial spine right off, leaving the pages bare and the circuitry exposed, but hey, that’s exactly how we like it. Go on, peep the read link for the whole set — they always said to never judge an (e)-book by its cover.
