Many details about the Kindle

Many details about the Kindle

Ok, we’ve got tons more kindle info! Here are most of the missing pieces on Amazon’s Kindle.

  • It doesn’t use a generic RSS aggregator — it’s Amazon-selected blogs only (and they “want every blog they can get”). Blogs that are aggregated by the Kindle get a revenue share with Amazon, since it costs money to get those publications.
  • The side scroller is, as we expected, a polarized PNLCD (pneumatic LCD). It looks amazing.
  • It’s SD only, not SDHC.
  • It uses the Kindle file format (which is a variant of structured HTML), but also accepts Word and PDF files (but only via email since they need to be converted by Amazon), Mobi, HTML, plaintext, and image files like JPEG, GIF, and PNG. Sorry, no RTF.
  • Oh yes, it supports Audible! Oh, and a little, unused file format called MP3.
  • It has a user-replaceable, 1530mAh battery
  • You can bind five or six devices to a single account, and share books you’ve purchased to those accounts. There’s no simultaneous reading lock, so if you and your significant other are on the same Amazon account you can both read the same book at the same time on your Kindles.
  • Amazon is also releasing the Digital Text Platform, which allows users to upload their own content to the Kindle store for sale and download.
  • The $9.99 price point is the sweet spot, but there are books for sale from the Gutenberg project for under $1 (if you don’t want to download them for free yourself), and upwards of that quoted $10 price point as well.
  • Amazon wouldn’t say who makes the device, just that “it’s an OEM in China.”

Amazon Kindle first hands-on

Amazon Kindle first hands-on

So we just snagged our Kindle, and we’re unabashedly stoked to get using it. Unfortunately the device came out of box with too little juice to get on the EV-DO network, but the e-ink display looks great (as we’d expect). The selector bar on the right is really interesting; it appears to be a white, opaque thin LCD panel that polarizes and turns clear letting reflective dots peer through — the end result is a small selection bar that looks unlike anything we’ve seen on a portable reader device.

The keyboard is clicky and tactile, but with keys shallow enough that they won’t get too in the way when you’re reading. We’re a little worried that the absolutely massive page forward / back buttons might get inadvertently triggered here and there, though.

Census takers’ custom PDAs get shown off

Census takers’ custom PDAs get shown off

We’ve already heard plenty about the custom PDAs that census takers will eventually be getting their hands on, but Popular Mechanics has now taken things one step further and actually gotten a hands on with the device itself (or at least the current form of it). As we knew before, the PDA is made by HTC and based on Windows Mobile, with Florida-based Harris Corp. handling the actual deployment of the devices, which are expected to eventually total some 500,000. While complete specs are obviously still up in the air (given that they won’t be deployed until 2010), the devices will apparently boast 10 hours of battery life, and pack integrated GPS to keep all those census takers on the right track, not to mention a built-in dial-up modem to ensure they stay in touch when venturing beyond the boundaries of Sprint’s data network. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, you can hit up the read link below for a video walk through of the device.

UK OQO announcement early next month?

OQO has been sending out invitations to a London press conference which will include a pre-launch unveiling of an unspecified product. They’re also announcing what jkOnTheRun calls an Anytime / Anywhere Computing Environment, which is so vague that it could mean almost anything. The CEO of the company will be at the event too, so we know this probably isn’t going anything as insignificant as a point update to existing models.

Samsung’s Q1 Ultra Mobile PC gets Ultra Premium, dude

Filed under: Handhelds, Portable Audio, Portable Video, Tablet PCs

Man, with words like “Ultra” (twice) and “Premium” in its name, you’d think that Samsung’s latest bump to their UMPC platform — the Q1 Ultra Mobile PC Ultra Premium — would be something to shout about. Unfortunately, it’s just their 7-inch Q1 Ultra done up with a 1.33GHz ULV Core Solo CPU. A nice increase in raw power, for sure. Yay?

Google activates IMAP for Gmail and here is How to Configure it
Found under: Mobile News, Communication, Tips,

Google has recently activated IMAP support for its popular Gmail E-Mail service. This means that you can download your E-Mails to your PC or Mac using Outlook or whatever you are using and in addition you can access the same inbox from your mobile device. Google is also offering a mail client for mobile devices but for the moment it only supports J2ME-enabled devices and since not all Windows Mobile devices includes J2ME but Outlook Mobile this is the better option anyway. Live from the Amazon Kindle launch event

Anyone reading yesterday knows today’s the day the Amazon Kindle finally launches, and we’re live from their big (little) launch event in New York. There are maybe a hundred fifty seats (and people are still filing in), so we’ll be getting started here in just a few.

Just the usual pre-event mingling. Surprising this place hasn’t filled up any faster. All the event handlers have very austere looks on their faces, as though they’re cramming for a really difficult exam, or launching an e-book reader.

We got the first picture of the Kindle! There she is. That angle up towards the left is really severe, this thing is far from flat. Announcer: “We’re getting started in just a few minutes…” More after the break.

ASUS’ R50A set to “redefine mobile”

Filed under: GPS, Handhelds, Laptops, Tablet PCs

All we have is this picture for now and the promise of more around CES in January, but that’s Asus’ R50A right there. It’s listed as a UMPC and said to “redefine mobile” with full PC and GPS functionality. Funny, we thought that’s what those gen one UMPCs were supposed to do 1.5 years ago. Anyway, this looks to be the R3 we’ve already peeped sporting a 4.8-inch display with abiggie1024 x 600 resolution.

Nokia N810 firmware leaks, runs on N800

Nokia N810 firmware leaks, runs on N800

Although we can’t see why you’d want to run anything except Palm OS Garnet in emulation on your Nokia N800 tablet, those of you aching for the latest and greatest are getting a little boost — the firmware for the N810 leaked yesterday, and users have discovered it runs like a champ on the N800. The update boosts the processor to 400MHz, revs the browser to a faster Mozilla-based core, and includes Skype video support. It’s not a drag-and-drop upgrade — you’ll have to score an N810 serial number and have access to a Linux box — but something tells us those of you who’ve snagged an N800 aren’t going to be all too fazed by that.

[Thanks, Kozzi]

Sharp’s new PW-TC930 e-dictionary, now with insect noises

Filed under: Handhelds, Portable Audio, Portable Video

Sharp sure likes to milk this e-dictionary form factor, but this latest trip around the block might be too much. The new PW-TC930 includes a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 screen, media playback of the MP3 and JPEG varieties off of SD cards, and all that usual translation tomfoolery. The big upgrade this time around? Bird and insect noises. Yeah, apparently Sharp is beefing up the Britannica-based encyclopedia functionality with audio samples, boring nature ones included. Lucky for us, Sharp stuffed in a 1seg TV tuner as well so we can avoid this whole “learning things” paradigm The Man is trying to box us into.

The Nokia N82 gets official

Right on schedule, Nokia has announced its latest addition to the multimedia-centric (and game-riffic) Nseries line, the N82 candybar. The phone clearly bears a striking resemblance to its recently announced cousin — the N81 slider — but the N82 ups the ante with a 5 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens paired with autofocus (naturally) and a xenon flash. Other features include microSD expansion, support for Nokia’s own Ovi goodies, WiFi, assisted GPS, a 2.4 inch QVGA display front and center, and an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headphone jack like the N95 before it. The GSM / EDGE radio does the quadband thing, but HSDPA’s available only on the 2100MHz band — so North Americans with an appetite for data need not apply. Others can buy the N82 starting today for about €450 ($657).
