Switchback UMPC shipping, manufacturer Black Diamond acquired

It’s been a bumpy ride for the rugged SwitchBack UMPC we first saw over a year ago — the developer, Black Diamond Advanced Technology, was purchased by Roper Mobile Technology, and plans for a multiple-OS support were axed in favor of an Windows-only system — but the device is finally shipping, as is a BackPack expansion module that extends the unit in various ways. Features include a 5.6-inch touchscreen with your choice of XP or Vista on a 1GHz Celeron M with 2GB of RAM and up to 120GB of storage with SSD options, that funky Alien-looking keyboard, a hot-swappable battery, optional Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11g, and GPS radios, and military-grade shock, vibration temperature, and immersion resistance. The optional BackPacks can be outfitted in almost limitless configurations, with plans for digital cameras, biometric security units, RFID readers, USB 2.0 ports, Type II slots, and audio in / out. There’s still no word on price, but Roper says the SwitchBack and a basic BackPack with audio I/O, serial and USB ports, and video-out are available immediately.

The T-Mobile Shadow, October 31 for $149.99

Wing who? T-Mobile today has announced the long-rumored Shadow, a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device that looks not just better than its Wing stablemate, but arguably better than just about any comparably-equipped smartphone on the market today. Besides the “slick, slider design” and a juiced version of the standard Windows Mobile 6 UI, the Shadow features a rotating jog dial front and center, 2 megapixel camera, WiFi, and a new version of T-Mobile’s myFaves interface allowing users to call, email, text, or MMS the peeps in their “fave five.” Like what you see? If you do, good, because it turns out this is just the first in a whole line of upcoming Shadow-branded phones for the carrier — a line that’ll be focusing on multimedia connectivity and slanting the work / life balance a little more to the “life” side than some of HTC’s and T-Mobile’s other smart devices (ahem, Wing, we’re looking straight at you). Grab the Shadow starting this Wednesday in “sage” or “copper” for a surprisingly reasonable $149.99 on two-year contract.

Nokia decapitates tablet puppy, upgrades to N800

We’re not sure if the new OS or upgraded features actually give it anymore bite, but Nokia’s adorable little tablet puppy has on first glance been beheaded and rebuilt with an N800 for a noggin. Actually, after an exhaustive investigation by the Humane Society, it was determined that the 770-based pup was not in fact harmed in some sort of perverse head-swapping operation, but is instead frolicking happily among retired AIBOs and broken Dirt Dogs at the robot hospital. Next up for the family is an N810-crowned model, whose QWERTY grille is sure to make other robot dogs cower in fear. Keep reading to catch a video of this precocious little fellow in action…

HP clarifies iPaq situation: 210 delayed, 110 shipping now

Filed under:

Looks like HP finally noticed that people were a little confused about the shipping status of its newest iPaqs, so the company dispatched Worldwide Public Relations Manager Mike Hockey to clear things up: according to Mike, the iPaq 110 should be in stores soon, but “a supply issue discovered in the development of the recently announced HP iPAQ 200 products will cause the availability to be later than we had hoped in some regions of the world.” So much for that optimistic ship date HP had listed, which appears to be a glitch with the web ordering system that always promises an “estimated ship date” of two days in the future. Also, it never comes to your Little League games. Stupid promises.

Apple envisions tactility on touchscreen keyboards

Tactile feedback isn’t exactly new to the mobile device arena, but Apple is apparently looking to add a bit of tactility to on-screen keyboards of the future. In a recent patent filing, the gurus in Cupertino have described four arrangements for accomplishing the aforementioned goal, some of which include adding dots / bars to keys and throwing an articulating frame underneath the panel to enable users to feel varying levels of resistance when mashing down. Per usual, we’re left to imagine where such technology could eventually end up (tough job, we know), but considering that this is the third touchpad-related filing seen from Apple in the past 20 days, who knows what is (or isn’t) brewing.

UPDATE: Check it out — seems this diagram looks an awful lot like something designed by Fingerworks. Thanks for the heads-up, Jason!

Psion Teklogix launches rugged iKon PDA phone

Last we heard from Psion Teklogix, it was busy cranking out a handheld workhorse for those rough days in the field, but now the outfit is celebrating its 40th year in the biz by offering up the iKon. This PDA / smartphone features a 3.7-inch VGA display, an integrated camera, built-in GPS, GSM / GPRS / UMTS connectivity options, Bluetooth, WiFi, a barcode scanner and your choice of Windows Mobile 6 Classic / Professional or CE.net 5. Furthermore, this tough guy can withstand falls from five feet to polished concrete, and it’ll also hold its own when faced with sandstorms and downpours. Sadly, Psion Teklogix isn’t fessing up to what the iKon will cost, but you can certainly contact the firm directly when it goes on sale this December should you be interested.

iPaq 210 shipping on Friday?

Filed under:

The last we heard about HP’s iPaq 210, all pre-orders had been canceled and HP’s product pages had been updated to cheerily say “Coming in 2008!” — which makes it so very strange that HP’s store now lists the business-oriented handheld with an “estimated ship date” of 10/26 and a $50 price bump to $450. We’re assuming it’s just be a typo like yesterday’s SanDisk false alarm, but there’s still a chance something’s up, especially considering the device was originally supposed to ship on the 8th for $399 — not exactly easy numbers to screw up.

[Thanks, Speed]

Palm Treo 800w revealed?

Are we staring at the new Treo 800w? We obviously know what’s up with the Centro and the 500 (namely the 500v), so the only missing ID in that lineup is the 800, successor to the 700-series flagship throne. Well, if this thing is the 800w we do kind of hope Palm tosses that fish back. Rearranging the WinMo buttons and giving the phone a more industrial, geeky look does not a greater Treo make, so unless this thing is like half as thin as current-gen devices (which it won’t be, Palm seems pretty dogmatic about keeping its devices thick), it’ll just be more of the same.
